Microsoft was seeking to streamline and enhance its complex financial reporting model for its Cloud division. Company data existed in disparate systems worldwide, causing inefficiencies in data gathering, analysis and reporting. The financial reporting system was laborious and inconsistent, in both timing and content. Sirius 6 was asked to use its technological and financial expertise to solve for the existing discrepancies and create a more efficient, standardized reporting system.

Approaching the problem in a holistic way, we first determined the necessary data, metrics and analysis needed to efficiently build the financial “story” on a monthly, quarterly and yearly basis. We sourced and analyzed all data points and metrics from a multitude of reports, which were independently generated by field offices around the world. Specifically, we utilized Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) statements to query data from Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) databases into Excel. We also worked with Visual Basic for Application (VBA) and Power BI to create visualizations for comprehensive trend reporting. Our technological knowledge, combined with our depth in financial analysis and data manipulation, allowed us to create the optimal process for a cohesive and timely reporting system.

Sirius 6 expertise allowed for the successful development and implementation of a standardized financial reporting process for Microsoft’s Cloud division. The cohesive process saved literally thousands of hours in both field and home offices, representing a significant cost savings. Our experience in data sourcing and manipulation, analytics, business intelligence and financial reporting allowed us to standardize and enhance the existing reporting system. Additionally, streamlining the process out of corporate headquarters provided Microsoft the ability to leverage its home office intelligence when telling its financial story.
